Group Classes Built Around a Program, Not a Playlist

Hartwell House group classes follow a 6-week progressive cycle. Each session connects to the last — so attendance compounds into real adaptation, not just effort.

How Our Classes Are Structured

At most gyms, group classes are standalone workouts: high-energy, interchangeable, and easy to drop in and out of. Hartwell House classes are structured differently. Each format runs on a 6-week progressive cycle written by our head coach, which means the movements, loads, and intensities are designed to build on each other week over week. Drop-ins are welcome, but regular attendees see compound progress because the programming accounts for cumulative fatigue and adaptation. Every class begins with a coach-led warm-up specific to that day's movement pattern, includes a strength or skill block, and closes with a metcon or conditioning finisher. Classes are capped at 12 participants to maintain coaching quality. You'll get corrected. That's the point.

Class Formats at Hartwell House

Five recurring formats, each coached by a specialist. All formats run on the 6-week progressive calendar.

  • Barbell Club — Tue & Thu 6 AM

A strength-focused session built around the squat, press, and deadlift. Percentages are prescribed based on your most recent tested maxes, which your coach logs at intake. This is not a CrossFit class — it's linear and methodical, with accessory work built in.

  • Conditioning Circuit — Mon, Wed, Fri 6 AM & 7 AM

Thirty-five minutes of coach-programmed interval work using the turf lane, Assault AirBikes, kettlebells, and rowers. Heart rate targets and scaling options are posted at the whiteboard. Modified for members recovering from injury.

  • Mobility & Control — Sat 8 AM

A 60-minute coach-led session covering joint mobility, loaded stretching, and motor control work. Required once per quarter for Performance members; recommended for all members dealing with chronic tightness or desk posture patterns.

  • Power & Plyometrics — Mon 7 PM

Sprint mechanics, box work, med-ball throws, and jump progressions. Designed for members with a strength base who want to develop speed, reactivity, and athletic carry-over. Coach prerequisite: you must have completed at least 8 weeks of Barbell Club or equivalent.

  • Open Coaching Hour — Daily 5:30–6:30 AM

Not a formal class format — this is supervised open gym with a coach assigned specifically to this shift. Use it for your written program, ask for a form check, or work on a skill. Included in all memberships. Most popular shift at Hartwell House.

“Barbell Club on Tuesday and Thursday mornings has become the anchor of my week. Coach Devon programs it in 6-week blocks and by week four you can genuinely feel the difference — the weights that felt heavy in week one are moving fast. It's the first time in eight years of gym-going that I've actually followed a program all the way through.”

Drop-In Policy and Class Booking

All classes are bookable through the Hartwell member app up to 7 days in advance. The 12-person cap is enforced strictly — late cancellations within 4 hours of class start are noted, and members with three no-shows in a month lose booking priority for the following week. This policy exists to protect spots for members who train consistently. Non-members may drop into any class format for $35 per session, billed through the app before arrival. Drop-in guests receive the same coaching as members for that class but do not have access to the program notes or the progressive cycle context. We recommend at least four consecutive classes to feel the structure working.
